About Uxbridge
Uxbridge is a suburban town located in the Western part of London. It is also administrative headquarter of the borough of London in Hillingdon. It was also identified in the London Plan as one of the major metropolitan centres and formed part of the parish of Hillingdon in Middlesex County. Of course, the Uxbridge is known for its remarkable places, which you’re going to learn about in this article.
Uxbridge Early History
The name of this town was derived from “Wixan’s Bridge”, which was sited near the bottom of Oxford Road. It’s where the modern road bridge is now standing. The Uxbridge name was almost certainly derived from the Wixan tribe, who had just settled on various parts of Middlesex during the 7th century.
In 1800, Uxbridge became one of the important towns in Middlesex. Its status as the first stopping point for travelling stagecoaches from London, going to Oxford. However, the development of the town of Uxbridge declined when the Great Western Railway opened in 1838.
What is Uxbridge Famous for?
Uxbridge is by far the most popular for the Battle of Britain bunker – which happens to be where Winston Churchill lived during dangerous periods of WWII. Today, the bunker is open to the public, and those tour guides can learn more about the history of the bunker and WWII in general.
